Review of Prayer over the faithful for this Sunday plus Comments

Review of Prayer over the Faithful for this Sunday
Continuing this excellent series in the PILL this week, Fr McCarthy OSB looks at Sundays Prayer. Literally we have. Receive O Lord, the prayers of the faithful together with these offerings of sacrifices (ie the Mass or could refer to the offerings of a spiritual nature made during the Mass) so that through these acts of pious devotion, we may pass unto celestial glory.
Our wonderful present translation by ICEL reads Lord accept the prayers and gifts we offer in faith and love. May this eucharist bring us to your glory.
As usual the original has been reduced to almost simple banality.
Press Review. This is just a brief look at various points in todays PILL
A new expanded version of Bishop O Donoghue,s FIT FOR MISSION published soon by CTS. He writes of a relentless attack on the Church seen in for instance the attitude taken by many of them against Pope Pius XII and his attitude to the Jews during the Great War. Also of course through the praise heaped on writers like Professor Dawkins and the writer Philip Pullman. He also warns correctly about the fact that so many (even Catholics) are saying that individual conscience is an infallible guide to our moral judgements and that this is caused possibly by a conscience damaged by habitual sin.
The Same Bishop has issued a stern warning to the LANCASTER CHILDREN SERVICES that unless it modifies its attitude to the adoption rights of same sex parents, all support of the Church will be withdrawn even to the extent of demanind the return of what is in effect Church property they own.
Meanwhile we read that certain Catholic Schools (Voluntary Aided) state that they will reject the government order in N I to abolish selection for entry, and in other schools that they will reject the governments plan for sex education at the age of 4 and reject too the vaccination against cervical Cancer given to children as young as l3 (This encourages promiscuity as you know).
It also appears that the Chief Rabbi of Haifa issued a statement in rather veiled language attacking Pope Pius XII for his attitude to Jews during the war and this statement was "conveniently " issued on the first day of the current Synod in Rome.
Back in England the HERALD reports that the parish of Moor Allerton near Leeds which was officially closed and its priest suspended for his attitudes, continues to operate with the same priest in defiance of the closue and his suspension.
I hope to send out another post tomorrow with more thoughts from Mildew

Re. Lancaster Diocese "Catholic Caring Services", the Preston Citizen, a local free newspaper providing its readers with doubtful value for money, interpreted Bishop O'Donoghue's strong words to the Catholic Caring Services thus:

"The Bishop of Lancaster Patrick O'Donoghue has said that the church will continue to support a Preston-based charity, even if it allows same sex couples to adopt".

This is what our bishop actually wrote:

"Catholic Caring Services will be required to discontinue any association with Catholic churches, parishes, schools or other Catholic organisations or societies, and Catholic Caring Services will no longer be entitled to the benefit of any Diocesan collections."

The Citizen reports the "Catholic" Caring Services' response as follows:

"The charity always has been compliant with the law and is confident that compliance with the new equality legislation will not compromise its determination and moral responsibility to retain as paramount the best interests of the child".

They don't seem to be paying attention.

I always look forward to your condensed "pill" summary - and was interested in reading about the news from N.I. Of course the education Minister CaitrĂona Ruane pushing this massacre of standards is a member of Sinn Fein. I could rant forever on this subject, but I'll just point out that pupils in Secondary Moderns in N.I. do better academically than those in most "comprehensives" over here. All sec mods have a compulsory grammar stream where late bloomers, and others with academic potential are well catered for. On the mainland, I watched in horror as my Catholic grammar school and others were dismantled, and their sites sold off by greedy dioceses in the 70s. I remember the nuns crying, and the cant of the "reformist" clergy - modernistas to a man. Rant over. Oh dear - I'm only back from confession an hour ago.......

And on another subject - do our catholic-lite primary schools ever check the contents of their libraries? Why did I find books by that oily creep Pullman in the Year 4 bookshelf at my son's school? (This is the same school that had a wall display of the Seven Sacraments, with a picture of a nun under "Holy Orders".)
